Helmet Fitting | Giveaway
Bike Norfolk and TriPower Cycling Club teamed up yesterday for our helmet fitting/ giveaway at Virginia Beach Parks and Rec Safety Camp. Each of the 52 third grade campers received helmet safety instructions, a personal fitting of a new helmet, information about checking their bikes for safety, and a chance to discuss their knowledge about helmets on the message board.
Here was one interesting discussion:
Kid #1: Will you get in trouble if you don’t wear a helmet?
Me: In Virginia Beach, it is against the law for anyone under 15 to ride a bike without a helmet.
Kid #1: What will the police do?
(Before I could answer)
Kid #2: Will you get sent to Juvie?
Me: You will not get arrested, but you could get a ticket.
Kid #1: Who would pay the ticket?
I mean, did you know about “juvie” when you were in 3rd grade?? Other 3rd grader vocabulary: cranium, drop bars, “structure of a helmet.”
The kids told us about the wheeled vehicles they have: bikes, scooters, skates, skateboards, hover boards, and e-versions of all. We emphasized to them the importance of educating their parents to also wear helmets.
A huge thanks to Pete, Sally, Diane, Joey, Lisa, Susan, and Bill for all the help. Shout out to Elijah at East Coast Bicycles for connecting us to good helmet deals and to Latrice Phelps with Parks and Rec for inviting us to participate!
